Product Summary
The Epoch 12V 172Ah Dual Purpose battery cranks your outboard and then runs the electronics, so one Group 31 case can replace a separate starting battery and house battery. You get 1,000A for up to 5 seconds of cranking, 200A continuous after that, Bluetooth monitoring and an IP65 case that handles spray and low-pressure water jets.

About the Epoch 12V 172Ah Dual Purpose Battery
A dual purpose lithium marine battery earns its place on bass boats, pontoons, skiffs and center consoles, where space and weight are tight. The 12172A-DP weighs 40 lb (18.14 kg) and stores 2.20kWh. It cranks the motor and still runs the fish finder, GPS, radio, livewell, bilge pump and lights. That's roughly 17.6 hours at 100W or 3.5 hours at 500W of house load.
Its BMS (Battery Management System) protects against overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent, short circuits, and high and low temperatures. That includes low-temperature charge protection. The cells are UL 1642 certified and UL 9540A tested, and the battery itself is certified to IEC 62619:2022.
Lithium Cranking Battery for Outboards up to 250hp
Epoch targets outboards up to 250hp, as long as the engine's battery requirements, alternator output, wiring and charging profile line up. The 1,000A, 5-second rating is just for cranking. Everything else stays at or below 200A continuous.
The same battery runs the house loads, so keep enough charge in reserve to restart the engine. The Epoch Li-Ion app makes that easy to watch. It puts state of charge, voltage, current and temperature on your phone before you pull the anchor. Epoch also recommends a backup starting plan for offshore or remote trips.
Parallel House Banks and 24V Trolling Motor Setups
Epoch approves this model for parallel banks only. When the house side needs more capacity, up to 4 batteries give you 688Ah at 12V. For a 24V or 36V trolling motor, pair it with a dedicated bank such as the Epoch 24V 60Ah Pro battery. Then let the 12172A-DP handle starting and 12V house loads.
IP65 Marine Battery Placement and Group 31 Fit
The IP65 case is dust tight and protected against low-pressure water jets, so it suits consoles and dry compartments. Mount it above any spot where water can pool, and keep it clear of bilge water and pressure washers.
The case follows the BCI Group 31 footprint, but Epoch notes it isn't a drop-in replacement for every lead-acid install. Check tray fit, terminal clearance and cable reach. Mount it upright, and secure it with the Epoch Group 31 battery tray or a strap so the cables never hold the battery in place.
Fusing and Switching a Dual Purpose Battery
Epoch calls for a DC-rated fuse or breaker as close as practical to the positive terminal. It also asks that the main protection and battery switch be sized for engine cranking current as well as house loads. A Victron 275A battery switch gives you a clean way to isolate the battery while the boat sits.
House loads belong on separate fused circuits sized to each load. Littelfuse MEGA fuses from 60A to 350A cover those branch runs from a distribution point.
Size the cranking cable for the starter's current and the length of the run, so voltage drop stays low. Our custom battery cables are made to order from 6 AWG to 4/0 AWG, at the lengths your layout needs.
Epoch asks that installation be done by someone who understands DC electrical systems. On a boat, that means sizing cable and fuses for cranking current, setting the charge profile and confirming the alternator path is lithium-compatible. Our team is happy to help with sizing for your engine and loads.

Frequently Asked Questions
Epoch bases the roughly 1,000 CCA figure on the battery's 1,000A, 5-second rating. Lead-acid CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) comes from a different test. So compare it with the engine maker's minimum battery requirement instead of treating it as a one-to-one swap. Check your outboard's manual before you install.
The battery takes up to 200A of charge current, but some alternators aren't set up to charge lithium directly. Epoch says to confirm the alternator's temperature, duty cycle and output limits. Where the charging path needs it, use a DC-DC charger or a lithium-ready regulator.
It's rated to charge from 23°F to 131°F (-5°C to 55°C), but Epoch recommends programming chargers for a 32°F (0°C) minimum. There's no internal heater, so the BMS blocks charging below the charge range. It still discharges down to -4°F (-20°C).
Program a 12V LiFePO4 profile. Set bulk and absorption to 14.2 to 14.6V, float off or 13.4 to 13.8V, and re-bulk at 13.2V. Turn equalization and temperature compensation off. Lead-acid desulfation and repair modes stay off, too.
Yes, with an identical 12172A-DP of the same age and condition. Fully charge each battery and match state of charge before connecting. Never hot-connect, and keep other models, capacities and chemistries out of the bank.
Store it between 32°F and 95°F (0°C to 35°C), at about 50% state of charge or higher. Check it every 3 months and recharge as needed. Epoch's warranty excludes batteries left more than 3 months without recharging.
The 11-year warranty gets you a free replacement in years 1 through 3, and 40% off MSRP in years 4 through 11. Register within 90 days of purchase, or keep your proof of purchase to confirm the start date.
