How to Choose AC Panels, Breakers, and Transfer Switches

1. Match Your Panel Brand

Breakers only fit the panel they’re listed for, so start with the Brand filter: Eaton BR breakers go in Eaton BR panels, and Square D Homeline breakers go in Homeline panels. MidNite Solar E-Panels and Baby Boxes are built around inverter systems.

2. Size for Your Service

Pick a panel with a main breaker or bus rating that matches your service or inverter output, with enough spaces for today’s circuits plus additions like an EV charger or a mini-split. The Type filter sorts Load Centers and Panels from Breakers and Breaker Boxes.

3. Plan Your Backup Connection

A transfer switch, like the Cummins RA200, or a device like the EG4 GridBOSS keeps backup power from a generator or inverter from flowing onto utility lines. Service entrance work and utility interconnection usually need a permit and inspection, so check with your local building department before you start.

4. Protect the Whole Panel

A panel-mounted surge protector, like the Eaton BR or Square D Homeline SPD, guards every circuit from spikes on the utility side, and the MidNite Solar SPD covers inverter and solar circuits.

AC Panel and Breaker FAQ

No. Breakers are listed for specific panels, so use the breaker type your panel’s label calls for. Mixing brands can lead to poor connections and can void the panel’s listing.

A manual transfer switch has you move power between sources yourself. An automatic transfer switch, like the Cummins RA200, senses an outage and switches to your standby generator on its own.

Yes, as long as there’s an open space, the breaker is listed for your panel, and the bus and main breaker can handle the added load. Our Eaton BR and Square D Homeline breakers come in single and double pole sizes.

An E-Panel is a pre-wired enclosure that combines the AC and DC breakers, bypass, and wiring an off-grid inverter needs. MidNite’s Rosie E-Panels pair with Rosie inverters for a cleaner, faster installation.
