MidNite Solar’s Overperforming Little Rosie for Stationary Installations
MidNite Solar designs quality products and manufactures them in the United States. This compact inverter and charger is engineered to output 4.5kW continuous power and to surge up to 6.75kW for 5s. Current Connected tested the Little Rosie and found it able to output 90A, or 10.8kW, to start two bounce house blowers while running at full load. This overperformance is typical of MidNite products, and we trust you’ll find the Little Rosie able to power your needs in any off-grid tiny home, cabin, or bunker.
MidNite engineered this inverter for longevity and durability. It’s not necessary to coat indoor rated PCB boards with conformal coating, but the Little Rosie RE boards include this detail to prevent damage from humidity or other corrosive elements. The incorporated silicon carbide MOSFETs highlight MidNite’s commitment to excellence, and the fact that they used all stainless steel fasteners shows their dedication to quality.
The Little Rosie RE includes many programmable features including Inverter mode and Standby mode. When in inverter mode, the Little Rosie RE powers loads from battery backup. Standby mode allows for an AC input which can either charge batteries or be passed through the inverter to run connected loads.
Standby mode also enables the Little Rosie RE to provide AC power from both external AC and battery power. This inverter continuously monitors incoming AC power and outgoing AC power. If it detects more outgoing AC power than provided by the external AC source, it can pull additional power from the battery bank to meet the demand.
The Little Rosie RE also includes 12 programmable terminals. Several devices can connect to these terminals, including the WhizBang Jr. The WhizBang Jr. is a MidNite device that connects to a 500A/50mV shunt and measures the current flowing into and out of the batteries. The system uses this information to measure the battery SOC (State of Charge %) and other information.
Two of these terminals are AUX terminals, and it’s possible to program them to turn loads on or off depending on the battery SOC, the battery voltage, the battery temperature, and more. It’s also possible to use these terminals to automatically start a generator.
The AGS (Auto Generator Start) function requires a generator with a two wire electric start and automatic cranking. Once connected, it’s possible to program the generator to start based on battery voltage, time of day, battery SOC, and more.
All AUX terminal programming requires the additional MNGP2, a MidNite device with a talking interface that can program and control multiple CANBUS devices like the Hawke’s Bay and Barcelona charge controllers.
When paired with the compatible E-Panel, the Little Rosie RE also includes the overcurrent protection and disconnect switch required by the NEC for residential or commercial installations. The E-Panel also includes knockouts for a GFCI receptacle and four MidNite breakers, making it possible to use this E-Panel instead of a traditional electrical panel in a tiny home or similar installation.
