Description

MidNite Solar’s Overperforming Little Rosie for Stationary Installations

MidNite Solar is known for resilient products designed and manufactured in the USA. The MidNite engineers designed the Little Rosie RE inverter and charger to provide 4.5kVA continuous output with a surge capacity of 6.75kW for 5s. Current Connected tested this surge capacity and found it able to start two large inductive loads while already running at full load. This test surged up to 98A or 11.7kW AC output power. This far exceeds its expected capacity.

The Little Rosie RE’s build quality is exceptional. PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards) on indoor rated inverters don’t require conformal coating, but it’s an included detail that protects the inverter from humidity or other corrosive elements.

The Little Rosie RE’s silicon carbide MOSFETs are the highest quality, and all the fasteners are stainless steel. Stainless steel is more expensive than the alternatives, but it is more durable, resistant to corrosion, and lasts longer. This detail may seem small, but it shows extensive care in the inverter’s build and design.

At only 15lbs and 6×20.25×9in, the Little Rosie RE is ideal for installation in a tiny home, cabin, or other location with limited installation space. This UL 1741 compliant off-grid inverter can accept AC input from the grid, a generator, or another AC source.

The Little Rosie RE has two modes, Inverter mode and Standby mode. Inverter mode powers all loads from connected batteries, making it ideal for fully off-grid systems.

Standby mode enables the Little Rosie RE to pass up to 30A from an external AC source to charge batteries and power loads. This is useful in installations connected to a generator, the electrical grid, or another AC source. If the AC power source disconnects through a grid failure or other malfunction, the Little Rosie RE continues powering loads from the batteries.

When in Standby mode, the Little Rosie RE can also provide AC load support. This setting allows the inverter to monitor incoming and outgoing AC power. When the outgoing AC power exceeds the power available from the AC power source, the Little Rosie RE draws additional power from the battery bank to meet the demand.

This inverter is designed to output AC power with less than 5% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion). THD measures the fluctuation in frequency and voltage. Power with high THD can damage sensitive electronics such as computers or TVs, but the Little Rosie RE provides safe power for every device.

This inverter charger includes 12 terminals for connecting various devices. These terminals enable remote connection for turning the Little Rosie RE on or off, connection for various CANBUS devices, connection to the WhizBang Jr., and connection to AUX terminals for a variety of automated and programmable functions.

The optional WhizBang Jr. attaches to a 500A/50mV shunt where it measures the current going into and out of the battery bank. This information informs the battery SOC (State of Charge %) and other calculations.

The two AUX connections enable a variety of automated functions. It’s possible to turn loads on or off based on battery SOC, battery voltage, battery temp, or the Little Rosie RE’s internal temperature. Other functions include a fan with activity based on the battery voltage, or load support when power from connected wind, hydro, or solar generators has already filled the batteries.

It’s also possible to use the AUX terminals to start a generator automatically. AGS (Auto Generator Start) requires a generator with two wire electric start, an automatic choke, remote capabilities, and protections against low oil pressure, high temperatures, starter lockout, and overcranking.

The Little Rosie RE can turn on the generator based on the battery voltage, time of day, or the battery SOC. It can also handle a generator exercise routine. It’s important to run the generator periodically to maintain proper functioning. The Little Rosie RE can do this on a set schedule, and it’s possible to define the generator’s maximum run time and quiet hours.

The two AUX terminals require the additional MNGP2 (MidNite Graphics/Programming 2) for setup and programming. This talking interface can control multiple CANBUS devices, including the Hawke’s Bay and Barcelona charge controllers.

CANBus communication doubles as closed-loop communication between MidNite’s Powerflo5 and Powerflo16 LiFePO4 batteries and the Little Rosie. Closed-loop communication simplifies the DC wiring, as it eliminates the need for an external shunt in installations with mismatched batteries.

The NEC requires overcurrent protection and a disconnect switch for inverters installed in residential or commercial applications. The Little Rosie RE E-Panel includes breakers that act as DC disconnects and AC and DC overcurrent protection, satisfying both requirements.

The Little Rosie is custom designed to fit with the E-Panel, and since the units weigh 15lbs and 5.5lbs, they are easy for one person to install. The E-Panel features convenient wiring for the Little Rosie RE, a place to add a GFCI receptacle, and knockouts for four additional MidNite breakers.

These knockouts make it easy to install AC or DC load breakers, PV disconnects, or PV ground fault protection. In tiny home installations, they can replace a traditional electrical panel.

Choose MidNite’s Little Rosie RE inverter and charger for a 48V stationary energy system. For mobile installations, choose MidNite’s Little Rosie M. These reliable, American-made products are built to last.
