Victron Energy Quattro-II 12V 3kVA 2x120V Inverter 120A Battery Charger, 120/240V Passthrough

The Victron Quattro-II 3kVA 2x120 is a transformer-based inverter-charger and transfer switch with grid interactive capability. It is ideal for heavy power needs like portable power stations, boats and yachts, grid-tied homes, off-grid cabins, and recreational vehicles.

The transfer switch features two isolated AC inputs and two AC outputs. The unit automatically switches between grid or shore power, generator, and inverter, based on which source is available. Both AC inputs are monitored for power loss, and the transfer switch reacts quickly so devices like computers and network equipment remain powered at all times. L1 on the main output has a transfer time of <18ms, and L2 has a slightly longer transfer time of 40ms. 

AC-Out one is for critical loads that should remain running at all times. By default, AC-Out two turns on when AC input is available, but can be reprogrammed to turn on and off loads at opportune times.

This inverter charges batteries up to 120Adc from AC inputs such as shore power or generators, and it can utilize the battery’s stored energy to power loads up to 3,000VA (2,400W) continuously. 

The inverter provides a pure sine wave output and 5.5kW peak capacity because of the low-frequency topology. For larger loads, the PowerAssist and PowerControl functions adjust charge current, and supplement incoming AC power with inverted power. They mitigate the chances of overloading an incoming AC connection.

When incoming power is more than the loads consume, PowerAssist automatically diverts extra AC power to battery charging.

The 2x120V feature means the inverter receives 120/240V input and delivers 120/240V output when the split-phase input is present. While the inverter only uses 120V power to charge the batteries, loads can be connected to both L1 and L2 and receive 120V power at any time, even if the 120/240V power input is disconnected. Loads that require 240V power must be connected to both L1 and L2 outputs, but they will not receive power when the inverter is disconnected from split-phase power that is supplied by AC input. 

Just like all Victron 120V inverters, this inverter can only output 120V power from the batteries. When there is no 120/240V power input available, 120V loads on both L1 and L2 receive 120V power, though 240V loads receive 0V. When 120/240V power input is restored, the 240V loads receive 240V power. This allows large loads like water pumps to operate only when AC input is available, preserving battery power for the critical loads in the system.

In any system with multiple AC inputs, it’s crucial to prevent multiple connections between neutral and ground. To address this, the Quattro features a dynamic neutral-ground bonding relay that automatically connects the AC neutral output terminal to ground while operating in inverter mode and releasing this bond when powering loads from an external source. This design ensures that two neutral-to-ground connections do not occur simultaneously, preventing electrical shock hazards and tripping GFCIs.

Multiple programmable control outputs can be utilized to trigger external equipment and accessories such as auto-starting a generator (2-wire signal), turning on fans, diversion loads, or lights. One programmable relay (NO/NC), one 12V 100mA outputs, and an external ground relay connection are available. An input is also available to remotely turn on or shut down the inverter.

Two pairs of M8 battery connection terminals are provided to connect DC power from a battery bank. Use two sets of pre-crimped 1/0 AWG inverter power cables with 5/16″ ring terminals for this connection. The AC input and output connections are screw terminals that accept up to 4 AWG wire.

Programming the inverter is accomplished by connecting a MK3-USB dongle to a computer. VictronConnect is used for basic programming and monitoring, or VEConfig for configuring advanced functions such as Aux relay output, grid-tie functionality, and more. Fine tune and monitor the system by adding a Cerbo-GX to connect the system to Victron’s Remote Monitoring (VRM) platform.
