About the Epoch 12V 50Ah Essentials Battery
A 12V 50Ah lithium battery hits the sweet spot for a kayak or small boat. It has enough energy for a trolling motor and a sonar unit, and it's light enough to carry from the truck to the launch. The 1250A-ES runs 50A continuous, with 170A on tap for 3-second start-up surges. Its BMS (Battery Management System) guards against overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent, short circuits and extreme temperatures.
Upkeep is simple: charge it, and check the terminals and cables before each trip. It's rated for 4,000 cycles, which adds up to years of weekends. It can grow with the boat, too. Wire up to 4 in series for 24V, 36V or 48V, or 4 in parallel for 200Ah at 12V.
Sizing a Kayak Trolling Motor Battery by Maximum Draw
Epoch sizes this battery by the motor's maximum current draw, not its average. That maximum needs to be at or below 50A continuous. You'll find it as the top-speed figure on the motor maker's spec sheet. For runtime, plan on about 512Wh. A steady 10A draw runs roughly 4 hours, and a 50W electronics load runs about 10 hours.
If your motor's maximum draw runs above 50A, a 24V or 36V motor keeps the current down. Three of these batteries in series make a 36V bank. The Epoch 36V 50Ah Essentials battery does the same job in a single case.

Fish Finder Battery With Bluetooth Monitoring
LiFePO4 holds its voltage steady through most of the discharge. That means your sonar, GPS and chartplotter get steady power from launch to takeout. The free Epoch Pro app shows state of charge, voltage, current, temperature and BMS status. One phone can watch a multi-battery bank on a single screen. The first time you pair it, the app may ask for the PIN printed on the battery label.
Charging, Cold Weather and Spray
Any 12V charger with a LiFePO4 profile works. Set it to 14.2 to 14.6V bulk and absorption, with float off or at 13.4 to 13.8V. With an alternator in a van or on a boat, Epoch calls for a DC-DC charger set up for LiFePO4, not a direct alternator connection. A Victron Orion-TR Smart isolated DC-DC charger fills that role.
There's no internal heater, so the BMS blocks charging below 32°F (0°C). Warm it into range before you plug in. It still discharges down to -4°F (-20°C), so early-spring and late-fall trips stay on the calendar.
The IP54 case shrugs off dust and splashes, but it isn't waterproof. Keep it out of bilge water and anywhere water can pool, and shield the terminals from spray.
Wiring and Fusing a 12V 50Ah Battery
Epoch calls for a fuse or DC-rated breaker as close as practical to the positive terminal. Size the cables, fuses and connectors for the load.
The bolt terminals use the supplied hardware, tightened to the torque on the product label. Need short, clean runs to the motor plug or a distribution block? Our custom battery cables are made to order from 6 AWG to 4/0 AWG.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. It's a deep-cycle battery, and Epoch says plainly not to use it to start an engine. If one battery has to crank the motor and run the electronics, look at Epoch's 12V 172Ah Dual Purpose battery, which has a cranking rating.
Measure first. Epoch doesn't give this battery a BCI group size, and notes it isn't a drop-in replacement for every lead-acid install.
Compare your box with the 8.5 x 9 x 6 in (H x W x D) case. Leave room above the terminals for cable bends, terminal covers and the lid.
Epoch says to mount it upright unless its documents for this model allow another position, and the current ones don't. Strap or bracket it so it can't slide or tip when the boat rocks. Never let the cables carry its weight.
Only if it can be set to LiFePO4 values. Lead-acid equalization, desulfation and repair modes must stay off, and temperature compensation should be set to zero.
A charger smaller than 25A works fine. It just takes longer to fill the battery.
Store it between 32°F and 95°F (0°C to 35°C), at about 50% state of charge or higher, with loads disconnected. It can sit that way for up to 12 months. Check and recharge it at least every 3 months. Epoch's warranty excludes batteries stored more than 3 months without recharging.
Years 1 through 3 get you a free replacement. Years 4 through 11 get you 40% off MSRP on a replacement battery. Register within 90 days of purchase, or keep your proof of purchase to confirm the start date.
