Product Summary
The Orion XS charges a house battery bank from a vehicle alternator or other DC source, delivering up to 50A with 98.5% efficiency and no fan. It detects engine run state automatically for smart alternator compatibility, and both input and output current are adjustable in 0.1A steps through VictronConnect. The IP65 enclosure handles dust and heavy rain, and the VE.Direct port integrates directly with a Cerbo GX for full DVCC system coordination.

About the Orion XS DC-DC Charger
The Orion XS replaces Victron's older Orion-Tr Smart series with a smaller, more efficient, and better-connected unit. It charges a house battery bank from a starter battery or other DC source using a fully programmable 4-stage adaptive charge algorithm. The circuit board is built on an aluminum substrate that doubles as the heat sink, spreading heat across the entire enclosure. This eliminates the need for a cooling fan while maintaining 98.5% peak efficiency. Full rated output holds to 104°F (40°C) ambient, with gradual derating above that.
This is a non-isolated charger, meaning the input and output share a common ground. In most vehicle installations this simplifies wiring because you only need to run a positive cable from the starter battery to the Orion XS. The negative side connects through the vehicle chassis.
Smart Alternator and Engine Detection
Modern vehicles with smart alternators vary their output voltage based on engine load and fuel economy targets, often dropping below the voltage needed to charge a house battery. The Orion XS detects whether the engine is running and only activates when the alternator is supplying power. This prevents the charger from draining your starter battery when the engine is off. Input current is adjustable in 0.1A increments, so you can limit the draw to protect a factory alternator from overload. A general guideline is to keep DC-DC charging below 50% of the alternator's rated capacity.
Bluetooth, VE.Direct, and System Integration
The Orion XS connects to VictronConnect over Bluetooth for monitoring, configuration, and firmware updates. The VE.Direct port provides a wired connection to a Cerbo GX or other GX device, enabling real-time monitoring on VRM and full DVCC participation. With DVCC enabled, the Cerbo coordinates the Orion XS alongside solar controllers and inverter/chargers as part of a single managed charging system, honoring BMS current limits and shared voltage/temperature sensing.
VE.Smart Networking adds wireless voltage and temperature compensation from a SmartShunt or Smart Battery Sense, adjusting charge parameters based on conditions at the battery rather than at the charger terminals.
Remote On/Off and BMS Integration
A dedicated remote on/off terminal lets you wire the Orion XS to an ignition switch, a BMS allow-to-charge signal, or any other external trigger. When multiple units are paralleled, Victron recommends using a controlled signal on the remote on/off terminal rather than engine detection alone, to ensure all units activate simultaneously.
Paralleling for Higher Output
An unlimited number of Orion XS units can be connected in parallel for increased charge current. Two units on a 12V system deliver 100A. This modular approach lets you scale charging capacity to match your battery bank and alternator without replacing hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions
The XS 12/12-50A is 12V input to 12V output only. The XS 1400 handles any combination of 12V and 24V, both input and output. Both deliver up to 50A. If your system is 12V on both sides and will stay that way, the XS 12/12-50A is smaller, lighter, and less expensive. If you have a 24V house bank, a mixed-voltage system, or might upgrade to 24V in the future, the XS 1400 covers all configurations with one unit.
Non-isolated. The input and output share a common ground. In most vehicle and RV installations this is standard and simplifies wiring, since you can use the vehicle chassis as the shared negative path. If your system requires galvanic isolation between the input and output (uncommon in most mobile builds), you would need a different product.
The Orion XS is designed for DC-to-DC charging from an alternator or other variable DC source. For solar charging, use a dedicated MPPT solar charge controller, which is specifically designed to track the solar panel's maximum power point. The Orion XS does not perform MPPT.
No. The Orion XS works standalone with Bluetooth and VictronConnect for configuration and monitoring. The Cerbo GX adds VRM remote access and DVCC system coordination, which are valuable in larger systems but not required for the charger to function.
DVCC (Distributed Voltage and Current Control) is a feature that runs on a Cerbo GX or other GX device. It coordinates charging across every connected source (the Orion XS, solar controllers, and inverter/chargers) as a single system, distributing current limits from the battery's BMS so nothing overcharges. The Orion XS participates in DVCC automatically once it is connected to a GX device via VE.Direct. You enable DVCC in the Cerbo's settings menu under "DVCC." There is no configuration needed on the Orion XS itself. It requires Orion XS firmware v1.03 or later and Venus OS v3.20 or later on the GX device.
Through the VictronConnect app over Bluetooth. The Orion XS has built-in Bluetooth, so you connect directly from your phone, tablet, or laptop. The app gives you access to all settings: charge profile selection, custom voltage and current parameters, input current limits, engine detection behavior, remote on/off configuration, and firmware updates. A Cerbo GX adds VRM remote access and DVCC system coordination, but the Orion XS is fully configurable as a standalone unit through VictronConnect alone.
