Add rapid shutdown functionality and optimize power generation from solar arrays using the Tigo TS4-A-O modules. The Tigo TS4-A-O is a panel-level optimizer with the added functionality of monitoring and rapid shutdown. Not only is this helpful for increasing solar production in shady conditions, but rapid shutdown capability is required for all rooftop solar installations.
Optimizers Help Increase Solar Production
Normally, if a couple solar panels are shaded in an array, current flowing through the whole array is reduced to that of the lowest-producing panel. With optimizers, the objective is to permit each panel to produce its optimum amount of power completely separately from the other panels in the array. The TS4-A-O is no different.
Tigo’s TS4-A-O complies with NEC 2014, 2017, 2020 for rapid shutdown requirements with solar panels. These optimizers are capable of performing rapid shutdown when paired with a Tigo CCA Data Logger & TAP (Tigo Access Point). These devices work in conjunction with the optimizer to provide the keep-alive signal. When an emergency occurs, the keep-alive signal is stopped and the modules stop PV production within 6 seconds.
While standalone optimization is possible without the CCA and TAP, there are a couple functions that do require it. The monitoring and selective deployment features both actively use the CCA and TAP. The TAP is installed near the solar panels and acts as an antenna to transmit and receive data, relaying it back to the CCA which is installed near the inverter.
When connected with the Tigo CCA (Cloud Connect Advanced) Kit, the performance of each panel with a Tigo TS4-A-O is visible on the Tigo Energy Intelligence (EI) platform. During commissioning, the arrays are mapped, allowing for an accurate visualization of what each panel is doing. This provides data to what sections frequently provide less power, which may give insight for shade mitigation like removing trees or adjusting panel location.
Fast Installation
TS4 spring clips are included for sliding onto the frame of the panel with no tools needed. However, if there is no frame on the panel, the spring clips can be removed and the 5/16” bolt holes can be used for attachment directly to a rail.
One TS4-A-O module is needed per solar panel. The Tigo module will connect to the positive and negative connections on the solar panel, then the Tigo modules will connect to each other. The array of panels will be wired to the inverter or solar charge controller via the Tigo TS4-A-O module wires.
Tigo uses genuine MC4 connectors for both module-to-panel connections and module-to-module connections, ensuring that every connection is secure. The modules at the end of each string then connect back to the inverter with the help of PV cabling. The modules are IP68/NEMA 3R rated, making them suitable to withstand inclement weather for many years. These modules are able to operate between -40°F and 185°F and up to 9840ft in elevation.
