The EG4 18kPV All-In-One Hybrid Solar Inverter
EG4’s 18kPV is an all-in-one hybrid inverter able to accept 18kW from solar panels and output up to 12kW to power loads, which is more power than most homes need. It’s excellent for completely off-grid installations and for systems attached to the grid requiring sell-back capabilities.
This split phase inverter can power both 120V and 240V loads. The 12kW continuous output is enough to simultaneously run an oven, a refrigerator, a dishwasher, a washing machine, a dryer, and more.
Since it can surge up to 14.7kW for 10 minutes or up to 15.5kW for 5 minutes, it can continue running these appliances while simultaneously starting loads with a high initial surge like five ton A/C units, water pumps, and motors.
This all-in-one inverter powers loads and charges batteries at the same time with PV (Photovoltaic) power or grid power. With the maximum input of 18kW from solar panels, the 18kPV can use up to 12kW to run loads and send additional power to batteries, charging them at a maximum current of 250A.
For installations requiring more power, it’s possible to wire up to 10 units in parallel for a maximum power output of 120kW. If operating at full capacity, this is 2,880kWh daily. Since the average American home uses 32-70kWh every day, this is enough to power many homes at once or commercial and community buildings.
This inverter is compatible with 48V LiFePO4 or lead acid batteries. The knockouts in the bottom panel make it easy to connect an EG4 WallMount All Weather LiFePO4 Battery or another 48V battery. When paired with the EG4 Conduit Box, these knockouts provide a clean installation with wires neatly tucked out of sight.
The included Wi-Fi dongle enables internet connection and remote monitoring through the EG4 Monitoring Center. This remote monitoring platform displays realtime system information such as power generated by solar, battery charge or discharge, and generator information. It’s also possible to view and change settings, simplifying system maintenance.
This inverter includes two RSD (Rapid Shutdown) options. Both RSD options send a shutdown signal to all RSD compatible devices, like the Tigo TS4-A-F module.
An integrated RSD button shuts down the system in less than 30 seconds, and an external RSD button, like the IMO Rapid Shutdown Initiator, can shut down the system nearly instantaneously. This is an important safety feature for firefighters and other emergency professionals who may need to access the structure during a crisis.
This outdoor rated inverter has an ingress protection rating of IP65, meaning it is both water resistant and dustproof. This makes it safe for outdoor installation, though it’s best installed out of direct sunlight or consistent rainfall.
This inverter is UL 9540 listed with most EG4 batteries. UL 9540 is a fire safety standard for energy storage systems across the US. To achieve this standard, the batteries are tested at the cell level, the unit level, the module level, and the installation level. Only a tested battery and inverter combination can achieve UL 9540 certification, though many batteries and inverters are tested individually and pass other fire safety standards.
It’s important for systems to be properly installed to maintain UL 9540 certification as only properly installed systems are compliant. Many jurisdictions require UL 9540 certification, and final compliance is confirmed during the inspection.
EG4 strives to “make energy independence simple and affordable for homeowners and small businesses.” One way they accomplish this is by shifting manufacturing to the United States. In the past, EG4 manufactured the 18kPV in overseas facilities, but they are beginning to assemble them in their Commerce, TX facility.
