Safety components provide protection against hazards in electrical installations, whether that’s a solar power system, whole home backup system, or mobile power system. While each component may perform a different job, the goal is to protect equipment, wires, and the surrounding area from harm due to faults and accidents.
Fuses and breakers provide current interruption to protect the system wires from burning up in the event of faults that send too much current through the system. While fuses are single-use and must be thrown away after blowing, breakers can be reset many times. Breakers can also be used for opening a circuit for maintenance, such as with solar charge controllers.
Similarly, disconnect switches provide the ability to open the circuit for maintenance, though they cannot open automatically like breakers. Disconnect switches with lockable positions are primarily used to lock out equipment which keeps the circuit open and reduces the risk of electrocution.
Surge protective devices protect against voltage spikes that happen either from external or internal causes. External causes can be events such as lightning strikes or grid interruption, while internal causes can be events like motors or large appliances turning on.
Rapid shutdown modules and communication devices satisfy NEC requirements, as well as provide the rest of the system with quick shutdown functionality for fast access to adjust connections.
