About the Victron Active GPS Antenna

The GX LTE 4G and GX GSM modems both contain a GPS receiver, but the receiver is inactive without an external antenna. This antenna activates it. Once connected, your GX device begins reporting its position to the VRM Portal automatically.

What GPS Adds to VRM

VRM uses the GPS data in three ways. The live GPS widget on your VRM dashboard shows current location on a map. VRM generates downloadable KML track files for each day, which you can load into Google Earth or similar mapping software to review routes. The geo-fence feature lets you draw a boundary on the map and receive email alerts if the system moves outside it.

Installation

The antenna screws onto the SMA connector labeled "GPS" on the GX LTE 4G or GX GSM. The magnetic base grips any steel or iron surface, so on most enclosures or vehicle bodies you can just set it in place. Position it where it has a clear line of sight to the sky. Metal roofs, toolboxes, or enclosure lids directly above the antenna will block or degrade the GPS signal. The 3-meter cable gives you enough length to route from the modem to a suitable mounting spot without an extension.

Compatibility

This antenna connects to the GX LTE 4G or GX GSM modem only. It does not plug directly into GX devices like the Cerbo GX or Ekrano. The modem provides the SMA GPS port, processes the signal, and passes location data to the GX device over USB. If you're building a new system, pair this with the GX LTE 4G. The older GX GSM is limited to 2G/3G networks, which are being shut down in many regions.
