Description
The Victron VE.Bus BMS NG is a battery management system designed exclusively for Victron Lithium NG batteries, providing protection and monitoring through VE.Bus communication with MultiPlus and Quattro inverter/chargers. The NG version introduces built-in Bluetooth connectivity in the BMS itself, creating a centralized monitoring point for all connected batteries through VictronConnect. The BMS receives current and state of charge data directly from the NG batteries’ integrated current sensors, eliminating the need for a separate SmartShunt.
Unlike conventional BMS architectures that use contactors or MOSFETs to physically interrupt DC power flow, the VE.Bus BMS NG controls the inverter/charger directly through digital communication. When protection thresholds are exceeded, the BMS sends commands via VE.Bus to disable inverting or charging functions while maintaining the DC connection. This approach eliminates high-current switching components, prevents arc damage during disconnection under load, and allows the inverter to remain in standby mode for immediate recovery when conditions normalize. The inverter displays specific error codes indicating the protection event rather than simply losing power.
Two RJ45 ports enable connection to the MultiPlus/Quattro port and a Remote panel port for GX devices, Digital Multi Control panels, or VE.Bus Smart dongles. The system supports up to 50 batteries in 12V or 24V configurations, or 25 batteries in 48V systems, enabling maximum storage capacities of 192 kWh, 384 kWh, and 128 kWh respectively. The VE.Bus connection provides bidirectional communication, allowing the BMS to reduce charge current gradually when approaching cell overvoltage rather than implementing abrupt disconnection.
The load disconnect and charge disconnect outputs each provide 1A maximum current for controlling external devices that lack VE.Bus communication. These outputs become free-floating during protection events to control BatteryProtect units, non-VE.Bus inverters, DC-DC converters, and chargers. Through GX device integration, the BMS extends control to VE.Direct and VE.Can solar chargers using DVCC protocols, coordinating all charging sources without additional wiring or relays.
A pre-alarm output activates at least 30 seconds before load disconnect, providing advance warning of low battery conditions. The configurable discharge floor setting maintains sufficient reserve capacity for battery self-discharge after shutdown. The auxiliary power terminals include a GX-Power output that supplies power to GX devices from either the battery or the Aux-In input, whichever voltage is higher. An external power supply connected to Aux-In maintains GX device operation and remote VRM access during system shutdown events.
The unit features three LED indicators for Bluetooth status, warnings/alarms, and VE.Bus communication status. The Instant Readout feature displays SOC, temperature, warnings, and alarms on the VictronConnect device list without requiring connection. Remote on/off terminals allow external control of both load and charge disconnect outputs. Operating voltage range spans 9-70VDC with 10mA typical current consumption excluding load disconnect current.
