Description

Victron SmartShunt

The SmartShunt measures all current flowing into and out of a battery bank. Based on the measurements, state of charge is accurately calculated to provide an understandable percentage readout.

It shows important metrics like voltage, state of charge (SOC), remaining capacity and current draw. By adding the SmartShunt, battery banks without monitoring capabilities or a built-in BMS have a centralized solution for system management.

It is installed on the negative side of the bank between the negative battery terminal and the rest of the system. The two terminals on the shunt are labeled for “Battery Minus” and “System Minus” to indicate which side connects to the battery and which connects to the system. For additional installation information, see the full manual.

Bluetooth Functionality with VictronConnect

Victron’s VictronConnect app allows remote setting adjustment including alarms, battery parameters, auxiliary input type and VE.Smart networking.

The status tab displays relevant information for the devices connected via auxiliary input in real time. This includes SOC, voltage, current, power draw and time remaining for charging/discharging of the bank.

The history tab maintains lifetime battery statistics from the point of installation, and whenever a new record is reached, it overrides the previous data. It retains information even when the shunt has been interrupted or reset.

The trends tab shows up to two data points of choice on one graph from the previous 45 days. Choose from State of Charge (%), Starter Battery (V), Voltage (V), Current (A), Power (W) and Consumed Amp Hours (Ah).

An optional VE.Direct cable can connect the shunt to a GX device like the Cerbo GX for remote monitoring of real-time status in the VRM (Victron Remote Monitoring).

Auxiliary Input

The auxiliary input allows for one additional feature for monitoring. There are several options, but it can only do one of them at a time. Choose between midpoint monitoring, second battery voltage monitoring or temperature monitoring within the Victron Connect app.

Monitor the midpoint for series-connected batteries. Midpoint monitoring measures the voltage at the connection point between two sections of a series-connected battery string to compare the voltage of the top half of the string to the voltage of the bottom.

For systems where main batteries and starting batteries share a common negative, the SmartShunt monitors secondary battery voltage through the auxiliary input port. Monitoring secondary battery voltage is helpful in motorhomes and boats to ensure engine starting batteries remain sufficiently charged.

The auxiliary port reads battery temperature with a Victron Battery Temperature Sensor by plugging in the negative lead of the sensor into the auxiliary port and the positive lead of the sensor into the VBatt+ port.

Sizing the Shunt

Choose between the 500A, 1000A, or 2000A shunt depending on the size of the battery bank it will be connected to. Victron recommends sizing for 125% of the maximum continuous current the system will carry.
