Description

The KPS DCM450MINI Multimeter is a multifunctional tool meant for both the homeowner and professional alike. It is useful for verifying continuity in circuits, gauging ampacity when an appliance kicks on, or measuring the temperature of kilns or engines. This multimeter works for many applications and for every stage of electrical knowledge, from measuring voltage in outlets to measuring resistance across a conductor.

A multimeter is the best way to confirm proper voltage and current flow at any point in an energy system. Verifying that circuits are de-energized with a multimeter decreases the risk of electric shock.

When troubleshooting an alternative energy system, finding voltage or current readings outside of acceptable ranges can indicate an issue with one or more components. If voltages are too low or too high, equipment can be damaged or fail to function. A multimeter that reliably measures voltage becomes critical for identifying the problem.

The DCM450MINI measures AC and DC current using the clamp at the top of the meter to surround a conducting wire. There are terminals at the bottom of the unit where probes can plug into for taking other readings. The measurement displays on the LCD screen in real time, updating three times per second.

This multimeter has a non-contact voltage (NCV) sensor, which triggers an alert if it detects a voltage between 80VAC and 600VAC near the top of the meter. The NCV function quickly identifies a live conductor, although using the probes to verify a conductor is fully de-energized is the best practice.

A K-type thermocouple is provided that plugs into the bottom of the unit for measuring temperature. The DCM450MINI measures temperature up to 1000°C/1832°F, which works well for measuring engine temperatures or low-fire kiln temperatures, or for diagnosing temperature-related problems within an electrical system.

The unit includes both a backlight and a flashlight that illuminate by pressing the hold/light button for more than two seconds. This is particularly useful for clamp meters, where light is not always present where wires are housed. The flashlight illuminates the clamp, and the backlight illuminates the measurement on the display so work continues even in the dark.

Multimeter Functions

The current and voltage functions measure current in either AC or DC power. Pressing the function button will switch between AC power and DC power readings.

The function on the dial below voltage can move between measuring resistance, continuity, diode forward voltage drop, and capacitance.

  • Resistance can be measured up to 60MΩ.
  • The continuity test will also measure resistance in a circuit, and the multimeter will audibly sound if the resistance is below 20Ω.
  • Diode forward voltage drop can be measured up to 3V.
  • Capacitance can be measured up to 60.00mF.

The Hz% position measures frequency and duty ratio. The Hz function measures frequency up to 60.00MHz. The duty ratio measures PWM (pulse-width modulation) waves and indicates the duration of the pulse compared to the total time in each waveform, shown as a percentage.

The thermometer on the dial is for reading temperature, which displays results in either Celsius or Fahrenheit. It can measure between -20°C/-4°F and 1000°C/1832°F.

The last function on the dial is NCV (non-contact voltage), which uses the NCV sensor at the top of the device. The multimeter has a high and a low sensitivity option, where it can detect voltage between 80V and 600V or between 160V and 600V respectively.
