About the BigBattery NEXUS 48V 15kWh Battery
The 48V NEXUS battery from BigBattery provides renewable energy storage for off-grid, grid-tied, or commercial energy systems. A single battery stores up to 15kWh, and it's possible to combine up to 15 batteries in parallel for up to 215kWh. Advanced features like fire suppression reduce electrical risks, and the internal heater makes it competent in many geographies.
Battery Management System
Most modern batteries include a BMS (Battery Management System) to monitor the battery and turn it off in unsafe conditions. The BigBattery BMS monitors voltage, current, and temperature to make sure the battery operates within safe parameters. If any of these variables deviate from the safe limits, the BMS automatically turns off the battery to prevent electrical hazards.
The BMS also continuously monitors the cell levels to ensure uniformity across the battery. This feature adjusts the cells as needed to make sure each cell charges and discharges uniformly. This maintains battery health and increases battery life.
Fire Suppression
While LiFePO4 batteries are some of the safest on the market, fire suppression technology provides additional redundancy in the unlikely event of a fire. This battery continuously monitors the internal temperature, and should it heat to an unsafe point, the aerosol extinguisher activates.
Cycle Life and Depth of Discharge
It's safe to discharge the NEXUS all the way to 0%, and when used repeatedly at 80% DOD (Depth of Discharge), it continuously operates for over 4,000 cycles.
Cold Weather Operation
BigBattery designed the NEXUS for cold weather climates. It can safely discharge when the temperature is -4-113°F, and it can safely charge when the temperature is 32-113°F. In colder climates, the internal heater activates to bring the battery temperature up to a safe charging temperature. This makes it suited for snowy climates.
Cables and Monitoring
It's convenient to install this battery with the included connection cables. The shipment includes one communication and two power cables, all of which connect between the battery and the inverter.
The BigBattery monitoring software provides real-time insights into the BMS. Once installed and configured, the software displays battery information including the cell voltage and temperature, charge and discharge current, SOC (State of Charge %), and fault history.
Choose BigBattery's NEXUS for a reliable cold-weather battery designed to deliver 15kWh to an off-grid home, grid-tied residence, or commercial energy system.

Frequently Asked Questions
The NEXUS supports closed-loop communication with EG4, Sol-Ark, Victron, Goodwe, Solis, Deye, LUX, Pylontech, and Sofar inverters through the RS485-2/CAN port, and with Voltronic Power and BST inverters through the RS485-3 port. If your inverter isn't on this list, you can still run the NEXUS open-loop by setting the inverter to a lithium or custom battery profile using BigBattery's recommended voltages.
BigBattery recommends 56.8V for both bulk and absorption, with no float or equalize stages (LiFePO4 batteries don't need them). Set the low-voltage cutoff to 50.8V. Maximum allowed charge voltage is 57.6V.
No. The NEXUS should only be paralleled with other NEXUS batteries. Mixing battery models, ages, or chemistries causes uneven loading and can damage the BMS in any of the connected units. The NEXUS also does not support series connection. It is 48V only.
NEC Article 706 does not require grounding for battery systems operating below 60VDC, which includes the NEXUS. The battery does not include a dedicated grounding terminal. If your local code requires it or you want the added safety, consult a licensed electrician for the appropriate grounding method. The inverter itself should always be properly grounded regardless.
The BMS blocks charging below 32°F (0°C) automatically. If ambient temperature is between 32°F and -4°F, the internal heater activates and warms the cells to 41°F before allowing charge current to flow. Below -4°F, the battery will not charge until ambient temperature rises.
BigBattery's monitoring software runs on a Windows PC and connects through the RS485-1 port using a USB-to-RS485 adapter (sold separately). Once connected, it displays cell-level voltage, temperature, charge and discharge current, state of charge, fault history, and live BMS events. For ongoing monitoring, most users rely on their inverter's GX device or app instead, which pulls the same data through the closed-loop communication link.
