About the Trina Solar 445W Bifacial Solar Panel
The Trina Vertex S+ TSM-NEG9RC.27 is a 445W bifacial solar panel built on N-type i-TOPCon monocrystalline cell technology. At 22.3% efficiency, it produces more power per square foot than conventional P-type panels, and the bifacial glass-glass construction picks up reflected light from the rear side to boost total energy harvest beyond the front-side rating. The all-black frame and cell layout give it a clean, uniform appearance on residential rooftops.
Bifacial Design and Where It Matters
Bifacial panels generate electricity from both the front and rear surfaces. The rear side picks up light that reflects off the ground, roof surface, snow, or surrounding structures. Trina rates the bifaciality of this panel at 80% (±5%), meaning the rear side can produce up to 85% of what the front side generates when exposed to reflected light. In practice, the rear-side gain depends entirely on the mounting situation. Ground mounts over light-colored gravel or concrete see the highest gains. Flat commercial roofs with white membrane surfaces also perform well. On a dark asphalt shingle roof mounted flush, rear-side gain will be minimal. Where this panel really excels is in snowy climates, where snow cover on the ground acts as a highly reflective surface during the months when daylight hours are shortest.
N-Type i-TOPCon Cell Technology
N-type cells degrade more slowly than conventional P-type cells and have a lower temperature coefficient (-0.29%/°C), which means they lose less output as panel temperature rises during hot summer days. The i-TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) structure reduces electrical losses at the cell surface, contributing to the 22.3% module efficiency. The practical result is more energy harvested per panel over the life of the system, especially in hot climates.
Split-Cell Construction
This panel uses 144 third-cut monocrystalline cells. Cutting cells into thirds and wiring them in parallel sub-strings reduces resistive losses and improves shade tolerance. If part of the panel is shaded by a vent pipe, tree branch, or roof obstruction, only the affected sub-string loses output rather than the entire panel. This makes a measurable difference in real-world installations where partial shading is unavoidable. To see how shading affects solar panel output in real time, try our Solar Panel Shading Trainer.
Glass-Glass Durability
Instead of the typical glass-front/backsheet-rear construction, this panel uses dual glass layers (1.6mm front and 1.6mm rear). Glass-glass panels are more resistant to moisture ingress, UV degradation, and mechanical stress than glass-backsheet panels. Trina rates this panel for 5,400 Pa snow loads and 4,000 Pa wind loads, and it carries salt mist (IEC 61701) and ammonia resistance (IEC 62716) certifications. This makes it suitable for coastal installations, agricultural settings, and harsh winter climates.
Warranty and Longevity
Trina Solar has been manufacturing solar panels since 1997. This panel carries a 25-year product warranty and a 30-year performance warranty with a maximum annual degradation of 0.4%. After 30 years, Trina guarantees at least 87.4% of original rated output.
