Overview of the Fortress Power eBoost Battery Modules
The Fortress Power eBoost 16 is a high-capacity modular battery designed for residential and light commercial energy storage systems. Each eBoost 16 module provides 16.077kWh of usable energy at 51.2V nominal, using Tier-1 prismatic 16-cell LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry. It is built for installations that need significant energy storage capacity in a compact, scalable format, and it pairs directly with the Fortress Power Envy line of hybrid inverters, including the Envy Duo 21, Envy True 12kW, and Envy 8/10kW models.
Capacity and Scalability
A single eBoost 16 module stores 16kWh and delivers 314Ah of capacity. For systems that need more storage, up to 16 eBoost 16 modules can be connected in parallel for a combined total of 256kWh. This makes the eBoost 16 a strong fit for whole-home backup systems that need to cover overnight loads, multi-day outage scenarios, or high-consumption households with large HVAC systems, EV chargers, or pool equipment. The modular design also means a homeowner can start with one or two modules and add more over time as their energy needs or budget allows.
Charge and Discharge Performance
The eBoost 16 supports closed-loop charge and discharge currents of 180A and 250A respectively when communicating with a compatible Fortress Power Envy inverter. For short-duration peak loads, the module can deliver up to 314A for 10 seconds and a surge discharge power of 16kW for 10 seconds. This burst capability helps handle motor startup events like compressors, well pumps, and power tools without tripping the system. The operating voltage range spans 41.6V to 57.6V, with a bulk/absorption charge voltage of 55.2V and a cut-off voltage of 41.6V.
Built for Outdoor Installation
The eBoost 16 is IP65 rated, meaning it is sealed against dust and water jets. This allows installation indoors or outdoors without requiring a separate enclosure or weatherproofing. Built-in heating elements keep the battery cells within their operating temperature range during cold weather, ensuring reliable performance and charging capability in temperatures as low as -4°F (-20°C). The operating temperature range extends up to 140°F (60°C), though performance will begin to degrade above 104°F (40°C).
eWay Wireway Integration
The eBoost 16 is designed to work with the Fortress Power eWay wireway system, which provides a clean conduit path for AC and DC wiring between the battery and inverter. The eWay includes a built-in 750A busbar for high-current DC connections. This system reduces installation time, simplifies wire management, and results in a professional appearance that meets code requirements without the need for custom conduit routing.
Installation and Mounting
The eBoost 16 supports both floor-standing and wall-hung mounting. Locking wheels are available for floor installations, allowing easy positioning during setup and service. The battery module measures 22.28 x 11.27 x 37.81 inches (566 x 286 x 960.2 mm) and weighs 304.2 lbs (138 kg). The eWay wireway (Sold Seperately) measures 22.84 x 9.52 x 10.18 inches (580 x 241.9 x 258.5 mm). Built-in busbars, conduit ports, LED status indicators, and an emergency shutoff switch are integrated into the unit, reducing the number of external components needed for a code-compliant installation.
Battery Management and Communication
The eBoost 16 communicates with the inverter via PCS CAN and RS485 for closed-loop battery management. This provides the inverter with real-time data on cell voltage, current, temperature, and SOC (State of Charge), enabling the inverter to optimize charge and discharge behavior and protect the battery from overcharge, over-discharge, and thermal events. When multiple eBoost modules are connected in parallel, they communicate with each other via CAN bus for balanced operation.
Cell Life and Durability
The eBoost 16 uses Tier-1 prismatic LFP cells rated for 8,000 cycles at 70% end-of-life capacity retention. At one full cycle per day, that translates to over 21 years of expected service life before the battery degrades to 70% of its original capacity. LiFePO4 chemistry is inherently stable and does not present the thermal runaway risks associated with other lithium chemistries.
Certifications
The eBoost 16 is certified to UL 1973 for stationary battery safety, ANSI/CAN/UL 9540:2023 for energy storage systems, and UL 9540A for battery safety testing. It carries CEC, LUMA, and oGPE listings and is UN38.3 certified for transportation. The eBoost is FEOC (Foreign Entity of Concern) compliant for 2026, meaning it meets the domestic sourcing requirements for clean energy tax credit eligibility under current IRA guidelines.
