A hybrid inverter is a multifunctional device that combines the capabilities of a solar inverter and a battery inverter. It converts DC power from solar panels and batteries to AC power for home use and manages power flow between solar panels, battery systems, and the utility grid. The hybrid inverter acts as the central control system of a solar-plus-storage installation, optimizing energy usage by directing power to the home, storing it in batteries, or sending excess energy back to the grid.
DC to AC Conversion
The hybrid inverter converts the DC electricity generated by solar panels into AC electricity that powers household appliances and devices.
Battery Management
Hybrid inverters charge battery systems with excess solar energy and convert stored DC energy into AC power when solar production is low or unavailable. This capability extends the usability of solar-generated electricity beyond daylight hours.
Grid Interaction
These inverters connect to the utility grid, drawing power when needed and sending surplus solar power back to the grid. This bidirectional functionality provides flexibility in power management and can enable participation in net metering programs where available.

Many hybrid inverters offer grid isolation capabilities. During a blackout, these systems disconnect from the main grid and use stored battery power to keep critical household circuits operational. This feature provides backup power when the utility grid is unavailable.

Hybrid inverters eliminate the need for separate solar and battery inverters, simplifying installation and reducing equipment footprint. By storing excess solar energy, these systems prevent waste and allow solar power to be used effectively throughout the day and night.
